Exploring software

Exploring Software

  • HTML- Is this a good option for creating a digital portfolio?
- HTML is defiantly a good option for creating a digital portfolio, with this markup language we are able to use markup tags that we use for describing web pages, they contain HTML Tags and plain text as well, they pretty much describe web pages. It provides a mean for us to create structured documents on the web with structural semantics for texts like paragraphs, headings, links, phrases and other items on the web page.It allows us to embed images, text and other types of media on our digital portfolios. Its written in the form of elements that consist of things known as tags that are keywords surrounded by angle brackets for example .

- The tags usually come in pairs, in such a way that whatever you do, you can later undo.
The purpose of web browsers like safari, FireFox and etc is to read the HTML documents then display them as web pages. it doesn't show the tags but uses the HTML tags to convert/ interpret the content on the page.

  • What advantages do we have using software like frontpage and dreamweaver?
- Microsoft FrontPage
Microsoft frontpage is a HTML editor and web site administration tool created by Microsoft operating systems. With frontpage there are interactive buttons that give users a way to create web images and graphics for navigation on web pages and links instead of using complicated image-editors like adobe photoshop and etc. It was created so users could be able to create and edit pages without knowing any HTML.

- Dreamweaver
Dreamweaver is a web development application that was created by macromedia/ adobe system, dreamweaver does the same things that frontpage does like allowing us to create and develop web pages/ sites without having to use or know in hyper text language.Dreamweaver can hide The HTML code details of pages from the user creating the web page making it possible for non-code users to creates sites and etc. with this application it is very easy to create table-based layouts. It supports CSS, JavaScript and other web related technologies. It also allows its users to preview their websites in locally-installed web browsers.

  • what advantages or disadvantages does wiki have for you as a publication tool?
- A wiki Like Wikipedia( for example) is a web site that uses a wiki software, that allows its users to create and edit any number of interlinked web pages using a simplified markup language or a text browser within the browser. They are often used to create collaborative websites, to power community based websites, for note taking, and in knowledge management systems. Most Wiki's have a specific purpose like Wikipedia which is an online encyclopedia, such wiki's accept all sorts of content without any rigid/strict rules as to how the information is to be organized.

- A wiki provides meaningful things related to the subject topic between different pages with easy page links and showing weather and intended web page exists or not.A wiki enables documents to be written collaborate lively in a simple markup language using your web browser.

- One disadvantage with wiki's is that any user can edit the information/ date on the web page and sometimes that information may not be accurate or true, so they aren't a very reliable source for information because pretty much anyone with access to the wiki software can change or add on false information which can facilitate abuse of the system. I don't think that using a wiki for a digital portfolio is a good option because anyone with access to the browser can change or edit the information you have put on your web page.

Digital Portfolio

Digital Portfolios

What Is A Digital Portfolio?

A Digital Portfolio is an Electronic Portfolio that is creative means of organizing, summarizing, and sharing artifacts, information, and ideas about teaching and/or learning, along with personal and professional growth on the world wide web. Digital Portfolio's are sometimes used to evaluate students, and show how the students have progressed through their years working technology. They Also Provide insight to either the student or teachers talents, skills, beliefs and acquired knowledge, They are extremely to use and navigate and also access around the world all you need is an internet connection.

Important Three Features Of Digital Portfolio

  • People are able to use it to show what they have accomplished and the skills they have acquired in and out of the classroom. It also enables us to share our experiences and work as students to various audiences.
  • Utilizes various technology tools and programs for students to create portfolios. We also get to document and reflect on projects and our other work so that we can grow and develop as learners.
  • It also helps the student/teacher organize and select best of their own products for the portfolio. self expression is also another important element with digital portfolios, college's usually look for enthusiastic students to admit, digital portfolios enable you to add audio and video and other media concepts to your portfolio unlike the regular hand written portfolios.

  • Access and availability is great with digital portfolios, you or anyone else can access and view the portfolio from anywhere around the world.
List One Advantage and disadvantage of digital portfolio.

Advantage
  • Later on in most people's lives, like when applying to a college, job and etc. You usually need a portfolio with the best of your work, that is usually a very difficult process because finding work that you probably did maybe 10 years ago on a piece of paper, especially if you aren't a very organized person and don't keep all of your work together is a hassle. with electronic portfolios, we are able to just post all over material and work in one place which makes accessing it relatively easy.
During their school years, students are able to collect and organize projects, school work, photos and other work into a multimedia format that represents what they have accomplished, and how they have progressed over the years with a digital portfolio.
Disadvantage
  • In some area's in the world, Internet is not easily available or sometimes the Internet can be down or a problem occurs with the server. Then accessing your digital portfolio will be a problem.
Sample Portfolios
- This Digital Portfolio is about a senior school project at Burlington High School by a girl named Jenna M about recreational sport.

- The heading in this case is recreational sport.
- In this digital Portfolio, she also talks about her life in school with learning disabilities and her struggles and successes.

- Its a Very well organized portfolio, the design is pretty simple nothing too over the top. There weren't many images, a good amount of text( not too little & not too much), She didn't use a lot of different colors just white and green, I would personally prefer a lot of color especially bright and fluorescent colors which she didn't have.

- It was very easy to get around, I love the organization, I think she did an excellent job with that. It was a very simple and basic page, very easy to navigate different things.

- This Digital Portfolio is about Sara. D's internship at eagle's outlet a Barrington High school store. In this portfolio she talks about the components of the internship, her hard work and challenges working at the school store.
- The Heading Of this digital portfolio is mainly about her internship at the store, what she did, what she had problems with and etc.
- In this digital portfolio she attached her resume, transcripts, her job application and other information. she also talks about her skills and accomplishments and keeps a progress log.

- I like this portfolio because there is a lot of details and information, and the way she organized her portfolio made it very easy for me to navigate around her portfolio. I also like the way she used many different colors that to me reflects and shows that she is a very enthusiastic and happy person.
The way you design your portfolio says a lot about the type of person you are. although like in the first one i didn't really see a lot images, but I like that she didn't put a lot of text because when you do have too much text, It becomes a bit boring and I get tired of reading all that information.

- The organization of her portfolio was very well done, easy to move around from place to place and simple to look at all her attachments and etc. I like the concept of having a sort of content text box on the left, and then having heading links to the rest of her work from the title's in the text box.

- This Portfolio is by a boy Named Zach who goes to Mt.Hope high school in Bristol, Rhode Island, his portfolio has sample writing, art and other ways he has met the standards in the listed subjects and some of his accomplishments.
- The headings in this portfolio are as follows-
  • Applied Learning
  • The Arts
  • English Language Arts
  • Health
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Study Skills
- Zach Basically features and talks about some of the things he has done and the skills he acquired from 9th grade to 12th grade in those subject areas like creating his sample digital portfolios, sample entries for writing narrative accounts, reading 25 books in 9th grade, how he understood the purpose and structure of government and etc.

- I like the way he had like two types of design setups for his portfolio, like some pages were with the black/red theme others had various colors. I think that is very creative, and I would Maybe use the same aspect in my coming portfolio. Not many images, quite a lot of text so I wasn't really able to read everything about his portfolio. I think maybe out of the three i liked Zach's the best, his design was very creative and colorful

- There was a lot of "ground" to cover in Zach's portfolio, a lot of information,I guess findnig things was preety easy and simple.Very easy to access all the different headings and etc. I got around his electronic portfolio very well. A lot of detail in different places, he also used the same left size text box concept, which I like a lot because you don't have everything all over the place.

I have definately learnt a lot about digital portfolios these past two weeks and I look forward to putting my own portfolio together.

:D
